The Max Martin jukebox show is the first new musical from the 2022-23 season to announce recoupment.
“& Juliet” is officially a hit. The Tony Award-nominated musical featuring the pop hits of Max Martin has made back its $17 million investment. “& Juliet” began previews on Oct. 28, 2022, and opened on Nov. 17 at the Stephen Sondheim Theatre, where it has since grossed more than $93,000,000.
“We’re so proud to be part of a show that brings so much joy to so many people,” the show’s producers said in a joint statement. “It’s exciting to be part of the theater industry’s continuing recovery and join a growing list of musicals that have recouped post-pandemic, which is further proof that nothing compares to live theater and the shared experience of human connection. We’re thrilled to continue to share our story of second chances with audiences across the globe.”
“& Juliet” is the first new musical that opened during the 2022-23 season to announce recoupment. It is also the fourth new musical to announce recoupment since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic (the others were “Moulin Rouge!,” “SIX” and “MJ”). When “A Beautiful Noise” closes at the end of June, “& Juliet” will be the only show still playing from the 2022-23 season.
Directed by Luke Sheppard and featuring a Tony-nominated book by David West Read, “& Juliet” tells a futuristic “Romeo & Juliet” story in which Juliet lives and sets out on a female-empowerment journey. The show features Tony-nominated choreography by Jennifer Weber and Tony-nominated orchestrations by Bill Sherman and Dominic Fallacaro.
The musical’s current principal cast includes Maya Boyd as Juliet, Betsy Wolfe in a Tony-nominated turn as Anne, Oliver Tompsett as Shakespeare, Philippe Arroyo as François, David Bedella as Lance, Charity Angél Dawson as Angélique, Justin David Sullivan as May and Ben Jackson Walker as Romeo.
“& Juliet” is produced by Max Martin, Tim Headington, Theresa Steele Page, Jenny Petersson, Martin Dodd and Eva Price.
